The eyes are a human being's most important sensory organ. We take in more than 80 percent of information via the eyes. So, the darker the environment is, the more difficult it is for us to take in information. This is why good light conditions are important, so that the eyes can carry out visual tasks effortlessly and reliably, but also for avoiding harm to health and hazards. Lux meters should fulfil specific criteria in order to be able to measure the light intensity and light conditions reliably and precisely:

  1. Sensor type: The type of sensor is important when it comes to a lux meter, because it has to perceive ambient light in a way that corresponds to the human eye. Eyes have different sensitivities to colours or wavelengths and perceive yellow and green light better than, for example, red or blue. This must also be ensured with the sensor.
  2. V-Lambda curve: Lux meters, which assess illuminance according to the V-Lambda curve (spectral sensitivity curve), are suitable for all common light sources.
  3. Operation: A lux meter with a well-structured measurement menu can be operated intuitively. This increases the efficiency and precision of the measurement, because measurement errors due to inadvertently false inputs can be avoided.
