Carbon monoxide and Carbon dioxide leaks can be dangerous if not detected early, In ambient conditions the issues can be associated with problems in the heating, ventilation or air conditioning systems. This can cause unmonitored levels of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide to leak into the atmosphere and cause illness.

Although humans emit a quantity of carbon dioxide themselves, researchers found that building materials and infrastructure can also contribute to the high levels.
